Dating was the Easiest!

In September, a Korean translator friend introduced me to a new webtoon on Daum and asked me if I would be interested in helping him release the english version. After helping work on the first chapter I was so inspired I decided to try my hand at making a book cover and possibly sending it to the author as fan-mail (this last part is unimportant).

Original Title
As far my research from looking at various manhwas in my collection of books has shown me I gathered a basic layout of the book cover specifications for sizing. Using this information and some previous pieces from old book covers I made this:

I wasn't able to finish adding the other things because I overwrite the original finished file and my internet doesn't work anymore at home. It looked so cute too!!!

House Ad

This was the first assignment we got for the semester. I honestly did my research on this one and at first I wanted to do something based on what I learned in Art History II class about spirit houses but after going through three drafts I gave up on this idea. So I grabbed a few House magazines from the library's discard piles and sketched out a general idea.

The theme is a red gold luxury dome houses. The logo for the realtors is in the bottom right hand side, the design is a combination of three sketches. Honestly it looked completely different in my mind when I combined the sketches but in the end I wanted something simple and visually memorable. The text layout uses two colors (a cranberry red and black) with two font typefaces each in various sizes. The images in the ad are from two of the House magazines I used in my research, I scanned the images and edited them in Photoshop so they would have the same overall color scheme and atmosphere. The side images have sharp edges because I thought it visually balanced with the main image of the dome's sharp edges. My wording is a bit off in the text because I'm not very good at writing stuff out to convince people to buy something.

In the end I really enjoye working on this assignment even if I made a giant mess while working on it. I enjoy staring at this fake ad because the rich reds and warm golds light a fire in my soul ^^.

Character Profile Sin

In August, I was inspired to make a character profile for each of my characters in Lost Sin (fanfic).

This is what happened...
For research purposes I was looking up random things and people's fashion ^^;; and in the end I found an interesting picture. So after spending two days of sketching. coloring, and basically just being silly. I made a picture of Sin~ to go along with the newest chapter (of the fanfiction that I still haven't done). Its her outfit for her first "date" with Paul.

I tried my best trying out the different settings on the brushes in Photoshop and used some basic shading. Overall I think the end result was a good attempt at textures and shading in comparison to the original simple base colored Lost Sin book cover from last semester (Fall 2013). I'm going to practice improving my drawing skills of human figures and clothes shading/textures. For the moment I really want to focus on making wonderful images that are monochrome with one other color.

Misty Rain Scans

MRS Forum - July 2014

A few months ago a friend asked me to help redesign her web forum, Misty Rain Scans. I didn't like the layout of the whole thing and the way people (administrators of the forum) kept changing everything to the point it became a jumbled mess of images, fonts, colors, etc. I agreed to help and after researching other scanlation groups' forums I came up with a sample layout for the forum administrators to preview and approve.

Sample Layout
The entire process took three weeks as I redesigned the top image (I used some level/gradient layers and cropped the image to change the original image's atmosphere in Photoshop and added a flashing title), Menu (I tried my best to design the menu buttons to match the top image but I feel my sizing for each individual button might have been a few px off), Post Icons (the kitties were inspired by a mahjong game on my phone and I really enjoyed making these three little icons), Background Image (even though the sample does not show the background image I had fun trying to figure out the proper sizing because webpages have a lots of unusual restrictions), and Who's Online image (this is another flashing image that I tried a dark circus them too but I think it would've been better if it had matched the text on the top image instead - I'm going to redesign this part for new year, maybe even redo the color scheme to red.)
